Lé Grotesque Facet of Human Nature_ lã GE 2006
5/13/2006 08:15:00 PM
At first..I was quite edgy about writing politics online. But I made up my mind.Ok..First things first. I set up my discussion boundary - no personal attacks on any member of politics and no biasness towards any party. You see, this is another year after 5 long awaited years when political parties clear dust, sharpen their armaments, fuel up heavy artillery to give themselves more oomph in their campaigns. However so, to me, a 15-year-old kid who had never ventured a step into the "looking-glass" of the political world; to tell you the truth, I was totally disgusted. The first point here is that, Nobody is Perfect. It is a Theory, a Law of the Nature that had been proved by the span of Time since it was announced. We,human beings,no matter how intelligent, how quick-witted are erronous beings; we are still Sentient, that is. Definitions,or perimeters set by Humans - are bound to have some risks of being wrong. Even the basic principles of "Right" and "Wrong" are set by us erronous beings. Who is to say if we are correct or not? We judge ourselves for our actions. Many would then say,"How would you know if you're right or wrong?".Simple.Since we created these perimeters; anything that demolishes or corrodes the humane nature of living beings physically, mentally, spiritually, morally will then be condemned by society and deemed as "Wrong".In this whole GE, we have indeed seen such destruction during every campaign that the current ruling party - the PAP have with the Opposition parties such as the WP especially. The main focus of the whole elections, however side-tracked to an incident when Gomez of the WP failed to hand in the minority certificate for the Constituent that he was running for. With a sharp eye and keen sense of impartiality, one can tell immediately that both involving parties managed to tangle themselves up in the huge wayang web, as what one of the PAP grassroots leaders claim WP to be.Oh, silly me. How can we forget about the small chit-chat session MM Lee had with a group of under-30 youth who are mainly reporters? MM Lee said that we,the youth of today would yearn to see the "clash and dust of the arena" as that is the only part of Elections that excite us. May I state, that through the whole Electoral processions, the once goody-two-shoes impression that I had of the ruling party managed to self-destruct itself.I am not deciding which political party is right or wrong, but the whole point here is that, this fight had detuored the main purpose of this GE.The main purpose? How the Citizens of Singapore are going to benefit from the newly-elected ruling party.During the daily campaigns, I received pamphlets from the PAP and WP. The focuses of the two parties differed to quite a large extent; to my surprise. The PAP concentrated in reinstating "What we have done for you with our money and lift-upgrading plan" whilst the latter "What we plan to do for you besides the lift-upgrading plan that you have heard a gazillion times". Yes, it is true when MM Lee said that Opposition parties would not have a level-playing field when contested with the Ruling party; but one must decide for themselves if this is doing any good for the Opposition parties who may prove to be as promising as the Ruling party.Back to the Gomez issue, no one, NO ONE will be able to prove if anyone involved is telling the truth or not by just seeing the matter superficially. You see, after Mr Gomez failed to hand in the minority certificate,he blamed the Elections Department for not wanting to produce the certificate when asked for thereafter suspected them of losing it; which after CCTV footage showed otherwise (he placed it in his bag after signing), the PAP turned the tables against him and started labeling him. Then words such as "lack of integrity", "corruptible", "how can we let such a person of no integrity to lead the people?" started spewing out from the PAP.MM Lee still dared Gomez to sue him when he called him a liar during one the campaigns, but said "he wouldn't dare" as Gomez himself did not tell the truth and did not have evidence to protect himself.Hold on a sec.Ask yourselves these questions before reading further.First. How can the PAP prove that Gomez's motive was to destroy the good name of our incorruptible PAP by accusing the ED? Next. Can we, the Citizens be sure if Gomez's motive was that as said previously, or was it because he truthfully forgot to hand in the certificate due to a moment of forgetfulness? Third. What will be the outcome of Gomez handling this situation: to admit his fault if his motive was to smear PAP's name, or to prove his innocence when PAP is trying to smear his?All comes to one conclusion: No CCTV footage, no propaganda speech by either parties will prove if he is innocent or otherwise. Only Gomez will know himself. Therefore, until he spills the truth, nothing else is the truth. Another concerning matter is about "First-World Government" and "Democratic Nation". I shall not venture into the First-World issue; in fact it is just a name to rate Governmental bodies but can only be substantiated by actions, not speech only, as the NATO (No Action Talk Only) saying goes. Its about us - if we are truly a Democratic State or not. We can only prove that we are one if we fulfill the criteria of being one. One of the tenets of Democracy, is "Freedom of Speech". This issue was brought up by many running candidates, although i am not certain of what they have said as I did not watch each and every campaign speeches. About a week ago, i heard a live pro gramme on a Chinese radio channel about "Citizens' view on the up and coming GE's".2 deejays were discussing about the GE's themselves after the stopped receiving incoming calls. The female deejay actually thought aloud; if we are a real Democratic country or not. She recalled an incident when she went for a political press conference. An 11-year old boy stood up and asked " Why couldn't we have freedom of speech?" the MP present rebutted him in a blunt manner, saying " The way that you just stood up and dared to ask me such a question, isn't that having the freedom of speech?"No. Absolutely not. What they have in America, is truly practicing the tenet of "Freedom of Speech". However so, such liberal conversations or should i say, speeches have caused a great deal of unrest as there are people who dislikes and disapproves of such liberal shoutouts. See, that is why this topic is so sacred in a tiny country like Singapore because a social unrest like such in the US will simply pull the plug and sink us six feet under. However, we do not have the freedom of speech because whatever we say in public about anything - especially politics - could just land ourselves in for a life-long vacation in Changi Prison, or worse still strip you of your wealth, status blah blah, leaving you a penniless, useless person. The 11-year old boy was not intimidated. "For every 1 person who dares to question authority, there will be 100 who does not dare to open their mouth". I salute you. He is stating facts, cold hard facts about the reality in Singapore. How are the Citizens going to voice their opinions and concerns when they are living in fear of being damned by the ruling party if they blabber something wrong?Think, Singapore. We still have many GEs to go. No matter whether Ruling or Opposition, think.Use our brains. We have to be thankful that it was the PAP who created this stable ground for us from nothing. We have to be thankful for our Founding Fathers who brought us today. We must not forget their grace, but we must look towards the future. How sure are we that the Ruling party will do as they promise? How sure are we that the Opposition are capable of handling a country? Some questions are rhetorical, such as Theories and Laws which are proved over time, however this world is still consists of Uncertainty that we,are uncertain if they will ever be answered.quoted from Henrik Ibsen:Those who corrupt truth themselves become corrupted.Isnt that right? eh...but so far no one's corrupted yet, i hope..
